Former HCTV Volunteer, Chris Stuard – “Where Is He Now?”
Chris got his start in television in the early days of HCTV where he quickly developed a love for all things TV and quickly decided that he wanted it to be a big part of his life.
After graduating from Herndon High School in 1994, he attended Virginia Tech where he majored in Communication Studies with a concentration in Broadcasting and minored in Theatre Production. While attending Virginia Tech, he participated in VTTV, Virginia Tech’s student-run television station, working on shows like “Tech Tonight,” VTTV’s weekly newscast, as lighting designer and camera operator.
After college, he embarked on a career in television as a Production Technician at WTKR-TV, the CBS affiliate in Norfolk, VA. From there he moved into news as a videotape editor and photographer. In 2006, he moved on to his current position as a Photojournalist and Satellite Truck Operator for WVEC-TV, Norfolk’s ABC affiliate.

Some of my daily duties include:
– shooting and editing stories with my assigned reporter on a daily basis
– running microwave and satellite trucks for live shots in the field for newscasts as needed
– acting as a field engineer to troubleshoot, diagnose and repair equipment problems in the field.
Having had a solid background in TV production made getting into the business much easier than it would have been otherwise… Having already learned how to operate field cameras, proper lighting techniques and what it means to white balance and properly frame a shot was invaluable. It’s been an absolute blast working in TV… I can’t (and couldn’t ever) imagine myself doing anything else. I guess it goes to show that when you put your mind to it, anything is possible!
